Tour De Finland 2023

It was the day before midsummer eve. I had packed all my belongings and was ready to go. A five week summer holiday was awaiting, and I had a clear plan.

For the first two weeks I would be touring Southwestern and Western Finland all the way up to Oulu. Then I would spend a week at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival and then go straight to Lapland before landing down through the Eastern and Southeastern parts of the country.

I had received a 1000 euro grant for this trip from the Central Organization of Finnish Photographic Associations, Finnfoto, I had an Excel with hundreds of locations. And of course I had my beloved and trustworthy summer car Alice, which was back in action.

I spent the evening of my last day before the holidays doing a small trek in a national park. After that I headed to my first location.

It was almost midnight, but the location is so central, that I immediately ran to the backyard. This here is a former worker apartment garrison of a nearby ironworks. Abandoned for years if not decades, it is in an awful condition.

After the house broke national news headlines earlier that year, fences were erected around it.

There would have been several open doors should the fences have had a weak spot.

Unfortunately the area was sealed and I was in no mood for climbing.

Moving on to the front side of the house looking for weak spots.

It seems, that the frame in this end of the building has already collapsed.

Quite a sight in the summer night. Unfortunately I had to admire it from the outside.
