Crossing The Finish Line

It’s August 21st 2022, just after midnight. A large yellow ferry arrives at port in a pitch black late summer night in the beginning of the autumn’s first rainstorm. My epic Tour De Finland has ended in success. Since late May I’ve been attempting to visit all the 570+ current and former municipalities of Finland during one summer, and the mission has been completed.

I’ve driven around 25 000 kilometers in a 29-year-old Volvo, which I bought for 1700 euros. As fuel prices skyrocketed that summer, I’ve spent more than 4 000 euros on fuel alone. I am listening to Hans Zimmer’s Time from Inception and I am crying.

I parked to the parking lot of a beach, and opened a bottle of champagne. I drank it in the darkness and in the increasing rain while crying a lot more. There was a huge wedding going on at a venue next to the beach, and I tried crashing it when I got drunk, but they were already leaving, when I only got started.

The following morning I started my trip back to the mainland. And once my mission was finished, I decided to visit a familiar location, a factory workers’ residential area, I had found by accident during my previous great tour.

There were three blocks of flats from the 1940’s and 1950’s abandoned in 2011. The factory wanted to demolish them, but they were considered a local landmark, so they just stood there while a solution was searched.

The facade of the first building was covered in ivy.

As was that of the second building. Nobody was taking care of them anymore, so the ivy had grown to cover the windows.

Good views from there, I’m sure.

One of the buildings seen from the other side.

Peace!

Hello, Teddy!

I went through all of the entrances, but they seemed well shut.

All the three buildings were almost identical. This is the third one.

And it really looks, like they have found a good way to shut the hallways.

Another wall covered with wild ivy.

The back of the third house.

All other kinds of nature is also taking over.

And finally one more photo of the back of the first house. No luck here. I guess, that I’ll have to come back again.
