It’s An Epidemic

For years now I’ve been complaining about old, 1930’s to 1950’s built school buildings being demolished around the country. Well, I’m going to keep on complaining, because here we go again.

This is the former elementary school of Peipohja in Kokemäki, the very village, where I bought my dear summer car Alice. It was built in 1950, closed in 2016 and the decision to demolish it was made in late 2022.

I was extremely interested in the building and this really made my hopes rise, that I could get inside it.

Unfortunately I am not inside. This view is through the windows into what looks like the woodworking class.

It looks like a lot of stuff has been left behind making the location even more interesting.

Although several windows seem to have been broken, the doors were unfortunately tightly shut.

And it seems, people have been having a good time here.

The fire escape is a later addition. It really doesn’t do justice to the building’s architecture, which I once again would describe as a lovely example of its era.

And once again typical for its era the school had two wings. The classroom wing is to the left, the gym wing is up front.

Some gym equipment was stored on the yard. Looks like the construction fences have already been bought to the site.

The main staircase of the school was in the junction of the classroom and gym wings. As always.

The gym wing. The dressing rooms are downstairs, the gym is upstairs.

There was also a garage of some kind downstairs.

The main entrance, again very typical for its era. But no open doors.

Sadly enough demolition started in September 2023, and another beauty was lost.
