Over The Hills And Far Away Part I

Although I prefer to explore alone, I am an active member of the Finnish urban exploration social media community. I mainly share my work, but am always on the lookout of new locations.

Most of the photos are from ordinary one family houses, which weren’t too interesting. Most of the bigger locations I had already visited or then already knew of them.

But one day the previous autumn a set of photos of a beautiful white 1950’s building with a large garage appeared. They claimed, that it was a former postal office, which I found a bit difficult to believe.

But I did manage to find one little detail in one of the photos, which revealed the very small and remote village, where the place was located in. I compared it with old maps, and documents. It wasn’t just a post office, it was a post and telegram office. That’s when I knew I had to get the big catch this summer.

And you already know me. When I decide to have something, I won’t give up.

And as it was all open doors, I went in. I was greeted by a calendar from 1987 and an ad for an electronics store in a nearby town.

There was a small toilet next to the entrance.

And I believe this to be the cleaning closet.

This must have been the post office back in the days. Decay was extensive.

There were at least two or three layers of paint on the walls.

A look back to the other direction.

And a very obvious sign of the place actually really having been a post office.

But this puzzles me a bit. Why would a post office have Coca Cola logos inside?

The back room with an ancient cash register.

There was an ad card for NMT calls printed in 1987 on the register. It featured numbers to nearby post offices. I’ve edited them away not to reveal the location too well.

The back of the back room.

A regional phone book from 1998.

Even the back door was open.

Now this puzzled me a bit. They were payment sheets of a bar. They direct to a bank, which has been merged with another one in 1995.

I’m just guessing again, but could it be, that the post office moved elsewhere at some point and there was a bar in here? After all the post office of the village did close in the 1990’s according to Wikipedia.

There were several boxes of them. Either the place has been a bar or the company never retrieved them from the post office.

Nevertheless, I again have to confess that I’ve removed some details of them.

A closer look at the toilet. I don’t want to know what that is.

And so I enter the main stairway of the building. This is again the perfect cliffhanger.
