Great Halls And Tire Marks Part I

Right next to the motorway between Turku and Helsinki stood a large, building, which looked a lot like a logistics terminal. Even more, it looked very much like abandoned. As I was making my way home, I thought, that it would be a perfect day to have a closer look.

Turns out, that it wasn’t a terminal. It was originally built as a factory of a local electronics company in two phases in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. This company grew up from a one man firm to a global giant employing more than 2000 people and submitting products to Swedish nuclear power plants.

Eventually around the late 1980’s to early 1990’s the company became a part of the global giant ABB, which closed the factory in 2004.

Back then another company had rented a part of the premises. A local shipyard was building ship cabins in the plant. Even this factory shut down in 2009 but was kept in readiness for reopening. Something was still happening back in 2012.

But that was 10 years before I arrived with my camera, and the property had stood abandoned for quite some time.

The parking lot was slowly becoming a forest and vandals had made sure, that there were no intact windows.

A part of it looks like flower pots and coffee cup lids, a part of it looks like old indicators of some sort.

The main entrance. The windows were smashed but the doors weren’t open. I had to look for new openings.

I didn’t have to look for long to find a side door.

It indeed looks like a factory inside.

The walls were covered in large graffiti.

And the tire marks indicated, that people were racing mopeds or light motorcycles inside. I am again pointing my finger at teenagers.

Luckily there were windows on the ceiling. Otherwise this would have been a pretty dark place to explore.

More graffiti by the side door I entered through.

It looks like not a single section of the wall had escaped it.

A large switchboard.

Some renovations had been planned in the early 2000’s.

The hand truck has lost one wheel.

A small room with lots of different devices.

It looks like I’m done with the first hall here.

This small and dark storage room reminds me of a bunker.

There was another, similar one.

What comes after the first hall? Well, a second hall of course.

The vandals have attacked the pipes. A fairly stupid decision, because of the age of the building, the insulation might contain asbestos.

Another one of my time has stopped photos.

To be continued.
