Disrespecting Their History

The following location was on a cape in Kuusamo. Originally it had been a children’s hospital completed in 1944.

The withdrawing Germans destroyed the building apart from its external walls. It became a regional hospital and then again a children’s hospital until 1950. After that it became a child care unit until 1974 and a daycare center until 1985. Then it became the storage unit of the local museum.

It served in this purpose until 1995, when it became a display space of the local museum only open on request. In 2021 it was closed and the town wanted to demolish it despite pleas from the local community and regional authorities.

In the summer of 2023 the demolition desicion had already been made. This was the last chance to see one of the few interwar period buildings in the area.

And what a majestic building it was.

The main entrance. The building was already in a very bad condition.

The porch seen from the side.

The back of the building facing the waterfront.

The, oh, so beautiful functionalistic windows and some electric connections made decades ago.

The other side of the building. And another, strange canopy.

An emergency exit, I guess.

Unfortunately the building was demolished a few months later despite the outcry. What a shame.
