The Worst Of Railway Architecture

The summer and the holidays ended. I was back at work and was preparing a business trip to Kouvola to cover an article about a railroad project improving the railroad between Kouvola and Kotka. I was supposed to go by car. When I started, something was off. I realized, that I had a flat tire.

I left my car by the roadside, took the first train and re-scheduled my entire day. After the interviews and field visit were done, I decided to take a train to the place where I had originally planned to go by car: the railway station of Kymi.

The station barrack was built in the 1970’s. It replaced a beautiful 19th century station, which was then demolished. Imagine the stupidity.

The railroad project included improving the platforms to modern needs. The station building was no longer in use and would not be in use. It was set to be demolished.

Let’s just say, this station probably won’t be missed. It’s awful.

But despite that I really would have loved to visit it.

Unfortunately I never did. When I returned in the summer of 2024, the station had been demolished.
