Who Would Want A Rural Hospital Part I

Time to visit a hospital.

Don’t worry, I am fine. This is a former regional hospital, which was built in 1952 and enlarged in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. The old part can be seen up ahead, the newer expansion is to the left. There is still one more wing from the 1990’s.

After decades of treating patients, its functions started to be closed down little by little. It started with more specialized care and ended with all duties of the hospital moving to larger hospitals and cities in the end of 2014.

Since then the hospital has been empty. The regional hospital district has been keeping it in shape and was actively trying to sell it.

The old part of the hospital was a really beautiful example of 1950’s arcitecture. But who would want a large former public building in a town, where the population is leaving. It has almost halved since 1980.

I didn’t expect to gain entry, but after the surprise at the locked school some days earlier, I decided to at least properly walk around the property.

The section to the right is from the 1990’s.

A look at what once was the back of the 1950’s building.

And the same corner seen from the other direction.

And the back of the 1990’s wing.

The 1990’s wing had been built to the end of a short 1950’s wing.

The facade of the 1950’s wing was fairly diverse.

The dormitory? Probably again meant for nurses and other hospital staff.

One more low wing behind everything else.

And as the newer part of the hospital can be seen around the corner, I’m now about halfway around the building.
