Winter Is Coming Part I

It was already late October. It’s around then, when the first snow lands on my former home town. I’ve come for another visit, and I’ve come to check, if the earlier covered Tahkokangas institution for mentally disabled would finally be open.

This is the former main and administrative building. It is all empty now, but there have been visitors.

Life Danger and Asbestos Danger on the stickers. The asbestos danger is actually just a scare. If nothing is broken and there is no dust, there is no danger of asbestos.

The kitchen of the complex. Danger of asbestos, danger of microbes. I’ve never seen such warnings before.

A courtyard between the wings of the main building. It actually consisted of several buildings connected with glass walled corridors. I suppose, that each wing had their own function.

The administration building. Now it’s not asbestos or microbe danger. This is straight death.

It looks like this is my last chance to explore the area. Demolition has already started, and the final wing of the main building is off bounds. Everything on this lot, around 10-20 buildings will be demolished to make way for a new residential area. And they have started with this one.

Taking first looks inside. Civics, grade five is the only book I recognize by the title. Oh, well, there’s also Maya The Bee.

Another view of the demolition site. They’ve started by removing the asbestos and then removing the interior. The next phase is the heavy machinery, which will chew the building down.

I considered the main building a lost case – at this point.

But still I took a look behind it.

And went to the other side to see, if there was still a way in. Well, there had been, but the ways in had been covered.

Doesn’t look very good, though.

So let’s move on to other buildings.

Several of the buildings had been entered at some point. I was hopeful.

There were plenty of buildings to choose from.

And even the fall colors were still in their prime. Although this one looks rather like a dead spruce.

But there, my dear friends. There was the first way in.
