Built as a municipal home in the early 20th century, the last inhabitants were alcoholics and disabled. When the buildings deteriorated too much, they moved away, and the place was abandoned.
Tuberculosis Sanatorium (2019)
Built in the 1930’s, this tuberculosis sanatorium last served as a refugee centre. A plan to convert it to high rise apartments for seniors didn’t materialize, and the city has neglected the valuable property for years.
Mental Asylum (2020)
A former municipal home built in the 1920’s and enlarged in the 1950’s. Patients left in the early 2000’s, and the buildings were used by other social services before being abandoned.
Nursing Home (2020)
Built in the 1930’s as a municipal home, enlarged in the 1950’s and again in the 1980’s. Apparently abandoned since around 2015 and a massive heating system breakdown has since destroyed the building’s future.
Mental Asylum (2020)
One of the last still abandoned buildings in a large mental asylum area closed down in 2000. The other buildings have been either demolished to make way for a large spa hotel or renovated for tourism purposes.
Mäntylä Hospital, Lappeenranta (2020)
A hospital complex featuring buildings from the 1930’s and 1960’s. Abandoned in 2010, the property was bought by a nearby cement factory. The buildings were demolished in 2021.
Mental Asylum (2020)
A mental asylum originally built in 1962, expanded in the 1970’s and 1992, closed down in 2006. After that it was bought by a Chinese businessman, who started a welfare business there. After a police raid and a massive inspection the owner vanished and the buildings have stood empty. In 2021 a massive fire damaged the location.
Mental Asylum (2020)
A mental asylum built in 1956 and abandoned for the first time in 2010. After three years of vandalism, it was fixed for new use. Abandoned again in 2015 its days look to be over.
Vuorentaka Nursing Home, Hämeenlinna (2020)
A former nursing home built in the 1950’s and abandoned in the 2010’s. The area was completely demolished to make way for new housing in 2020.
Tuukkala Mental Asylum, Mikkeli (2020)
This mental asylum was built in the early 1960’s. After the focus in mental health treatment changed, it housed a health care centre and wards before being abandoned around 2010. The complex was demolished in 2021.

Valkeinen Hospital, Kuopio (2020)
A former hospital built in the early 1950’s, enlarged in the late 1980’s and abandoned in 2013. The hospital was demolished in 2022 to make way for apartments.
Epilepsy Hospital (2020)
An epilepsy hospital built in the 1930’s last served as accommodation for asylum seekers in the early 2000’s. Abandoned for around 20 years by the time of my visit.
