Municipal Home (2019)
Built as a municipal home in the early 20th century, the last inhabitants were alcoholics and disabled. When the buildings deteriorated too much, they moved away, and the place was abandoned.
Tuberculosis Sanatorium (2019)
Built in the 1930’s, this tuberculosis sanatorium last served as a refugee centre. A plan to convert it to high rise apartments for seniors didn’t materialize, and the city has neglected the valuable property for years.
Mental Asylum (2020)
A former municipal home built in the 1920’s and enlarged in the 1950’s. Patients left in the early 2000’s, and the buildings were used by other social services before being abandoned.
Nursing Home (2020)
Built in the 1930’s as a municipal home, enlarged in the 1950’s and again in the 1980’s. Apparently abandoned since around 2015 and a massive heating system breakdown has since destroyed the building’s future.
Mental Asylum (2020)
One of the last still abandoned buildings in a large mental asylum area closed down in 2000. The other buildings have been either demolished to make way for a large spa hotel or renovated for tourism purposes.
Mäntylä Hospital, Lappeenranta (2020)
A hospital complex featuring buildings from the 1930’s and 1960’s. Abandoned in 2010, the property was bought by a nearby cement factory. The buildings were demolished in 2021.
Mental Asylum (2020)
A mental asylum originally built in 1962, expanded in the 1970’s and 1992, closed down in 2006. After that it was bought by a Chinese businessman, who started a welfare business there. After a police raid and a massive inspection the owner vanished and the buildings have stood empty. In 2021 a massive fire damaged the location.

A mental asylum built in 1956 and abandoned for the first time in 2010. After three years of vandalism, it was fixed for new use. Abandoned again in 2015 its days look to be over.
Vuorentaka Nursing Home, Hämeenlinna (2020)
A former nursing home built in the 1950’s and abandoned in the 2010’s. The area was completely demolished to make way for new housing in 2020.
Tuukkala Mental Asylum, Mikkeli (2020)
This mental asylum was built in the early 1960’s. After the focus in mental health treatment changed, it housed a health care centre and wards before being abandoned around 2010. The complex was demolished in 2021.

A former municipal home and mental asylum built in the 1920’s and 1967 and abandoned in 2020. There were plans to demolish the newer hospital building.
Valkeinen Hospital, Kuopio (2020)
A former hospital built in the early 1950’s, enlarged in the late 1980’s and abandoned in 2013. The hospital was demolished in 2022 to make way for apartments.
Epilepsy Hospital (2020)
An epilepsy hospital built in the 1930’s last served as accommodation for asylum seekers in the early 2000’s. Abandoned for around 20 years by the time of my visit.
Nursing Home (2020)
A municipal home built in the 1940’s and enlarged to become a nursing home in the 1960’s. Abandoned since 2018 it has undergone several ownership changes, the latest of which became nationwide news.
Mental Asylum (2020)
Built in 1952, the mental asylum was enlarged during the following decades. In 2008 the patients were moved to a nearby city and a the private nursing home, which moved in has since left.
Health Care Buildings, Kuortane (2020)
Two old brick buildings, which were being demolished. Originally built as the municipal doctors’ house and child health center, the other one later served as a kindergarten.

Built in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s the building’s days as a hospital ended in the early 2000’s. Bought by the town, sold to an investor, abandoned, vandalized and bought by the town again in 2017.
Tahkokangas Institution For Mentally Disabled, Oulu (2020)
The central institution for mentally disabled in Northern Ostrobotnia was built between 1969 and 1975 and closed down in 2019. The buildings stood empty, while they waited for the plans to rebuild the lot into a residential area to materialize.

Built in 1929 as a municipal home, became a mental asylum in the 1950’s. Enlarged with a new main building in 1967 and abandoned after a change of use in 2017.

A former municipal home built in the 1930’s and enlarged in the 1950’s. The sick and elderly left in 1991 and the buildings were used as a motel and accommodation for seasonal workers. Possible date of abandonment around 2010.

A mental asylum opened in 2015 and closed in 2019. There were several buildings from different eras, some of which were still in use.

Built in 1914 this building last served patients, who needed daily ward but didn’t have to stay at the hospital. The hospital was closed in 1999, and most of the buildings have found new use as apartments.

An institution for mentally disabled people and abandoned in 2014. Waiting for a new owner, the area was sold to a new owner in 2025.
Child Caring Institution (2023)
Originally the main building of a farm built in the 1850’s, this building later became a school and a child caring institution among others. Abandoned since 1999 it is facing a demolition threat.
Health Station (2023)
Designed by two famous architects, this health station opened in 1953 and was enlarged in 1966. It was closed in 2015 and is currently under demolition threat.

A set of nursing home buildings built in 1955 and in the 1980’s to replace the original 1930’s building. Abandoned since 2016, they are set to be demolished in 2028.
Teenager Psychiatric Ward (2023)
Originally an 1950’s built part of a larger municipal home area, this building became a small psychiatric ward for teenage patient operating under the regional central hospital. The patients moved to the big city in the early 2020’s and the place now sits empty.
Clinic (2023)
The former district hospital built in the 1930’s and enlarged in the 1960’s. Abandoned in 2018 and currently waiting for a new detail plan, which would preserve the oldest part and allow new blocks of flats.
Nursing Home (2023)
An old municipal home completed in 1949 and closed in 1993. Was shut off by the police after becoming a popular hangout. In private ownership.
Porkkatörmä Hospital, Kuusamo (2023)
A hospital building completed in 1944 and rebuilt after the war. Originally a hospital, it later served as a child care unit, a kindergarten and a storage space for the local museum until being abandoned in 2021. Demolished in 2023.
